Getting Pregnant: Overcoming the Obstacles

Most couples of child bearing age will conceive naturally within a year of having unprotected intercourse on a regular basis, all other things being equal.  It often becomes a cause for worry if a woman looking to get pregnant has not conceived after this period.

Attention must be paid to certain health issues that may be constituting an impediment to natural conception. Many such women can get pregnant naturally by following a fertility enhancing program designed specifically for dealing with these problems.

Scientific evidence suggests that the male spermatozoa can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to one week after sexual intercourse and that having intercourse every 2- 3 days will significantly increase the odds of getting pregnant naturally. Where this does not occur, the use of basal body temperature or urinary LH kits to predict the period of ovulation can be useful.

Timing of Ovulation
A woman must release an egg from one of her ovaries before she can get pregnant. A woman with regular monthly periods is most likely ovulating. Although ovulation occurs at about the middle of a woman’s menstrual cycle, not every woman ovulates on day 14.

In fact, normal ovulation may occur as early as the 10
th day of menstruation and may be as late as the 20th day, depending on the length of the woman’s menstrual cycle.

Although the male sperm remains active for up to 5 days, the woman’s egg remains viable for only 24 hours. It is therefore important to have intercourse as close to the day the woman’s egg is released as possible.

If you have a regular 28 day menstrual cycle, you can work out the day your egg will be released by counting from the first day of full menstrual flow through to the 14
th day. However, as previously stated, ovulation will not always take place exactly on the 14th day. It is therefore advisable to have intercourse on the days leading up to and around the day of ovulation.

Obviously the most effective way to get pregnant would be to determine the exact day the egg will be released, and then have intercourse on that day. Tracking the body’s basal body temperature and cervical mucus may be helpful.

Using a basal thermometer, you can monitor your body temperature daily and watch for the two to three days of temperature rise which usually follows the day of ovulation. However, since rise in body temperature takes place after the day you have ovulated, it may be too late to optimise the chances of conception in that menstrual cycle.

A more reliable method is the cervical mucus observation technique. The details for utilising this technique will be discussed in a subsequent article.

Benefits of Acupuncture Therapy

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapeutic method involving the insertion of fine needles at certain points in the body for treatment or prevention of ailments. It is based on a traditional Chinese belief that a ‘life force’ referred to as ‘Qi’ flows freely through the body via certain channels called meridians. Illness is thought to result from any type of impediment to the flow of Qi, and acupuncture is believed to have the capacity to restore the flow.

How Acupuncture Works
Researchers in the western world observed that adenosine influences the effects of acupuncture. A research published in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience on May 30, 2010 concluded that adenosine, an amino acid that has the ability to relieve pain was released in mice during acupuncture.

It is believed that the beneficial effects of acupuncture are attributable to the production of natural substances such as adenosine and others, which are released when sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles are stimulated by needles inserted at specific points in the body. Much of the use of acupuncture for treatment in Western countries focuses on this relief of pain rather than the traditional role of acupuncture in re-balancing the flow of Qi through the body.

Uses of Acupuncture
According to an article published by Dr Brennan McKenzie on May 25, 2011 in the online edition of Science-Based Medicine, acupuncture is widely used for the treatment of pain and musculoskeletal conditions, irrespective of ethnicity or nationality. The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) in 2007 revealed that in the United States, 6.5% of Americans reported they had used acupuncture at one time or the other. Most of them had done so for some type of pain and these include arthritis or other orthopaedic pain, headaches and fibromyalgia.

In the United Kingdom, acupuncture may be recommended as treatment option for migraines and chronic-type headaches, neck pain, joint pain, dental pain and chronic post-operative pain. In various other countries, acupuncture is still used to promote and restore the flow of Qi throughout the body. In these countries, the benefits of acupuncture are extended to dozens of other conditions which include various types of digestive complaints and emotional disorders.

Like other therapeutic methods, acupuncture has its own side effects, the most common being bruising or bleeding at the acupuncture site. Patients with bleeding disorders and those on blood thinning drugs should seek medical advice before embarking on acupuncture therapy.

Stop Emotional Eating and Get Rid of Excessive Weight

Eating is a part of life.  Your body gets its nutrients from food.  Sometimes we go overboard with our eating habits and it results in unhealthy weight gain. Aside from being problematic to the waistline, eating mindlessly can lead to serious health problems.

What is Emotional Eating?
Emotional eating begins in the mind.  When stress takes its toll on your life, your defence systems get compromised and your health takes a hit.  Everyone has good days and bad days.  How we deal with the bad ones may bring emotional eating into play if we look for comfort for our hurts.  Those who turn to food for comfort find coping mechanisms that won’t judge them, hurt them or tell them “no.”

To complicate the issue, eating pleasurable foods can stimulate the release of endorphins just like exercise.  So, after you eat, you feel better. Emotional eaters use food to relieve stress.  They hide behind the food instead of seeking solutions to their problems.  This is not uncommon when the stressor is something horrible, such as physical abuse or a death.

Are You Dealing with Emotional Eating?
But, how do you know you are using food in this way?  The first sign is obvious, weight gain.  You will gain weight if you eat too much.

In light of the weight gain, examine other areas of your life:

* Have you been under stress lately at work or at home?
* Has anything traumatic happened in the last year?
* Are you dealing with a problem but haven’t found a solution?
Answering “yes” to any of these questions could mean that you are an emotional eater.  You eat but you are not necessarily hungry at the time.  The foods that you choose are what we term “comfort foods”:

* High fat foods like French fries, fried foods
* High carb foods like macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes
* Sugary foods like ice cream, donuts, cookies, cake

There is help for emotional eaters.  The first step is recognising that you have a problem.  You’ll experience a feeling of helplessness and guilt.  The guilt is over potentially ruining your health and the helplessness lies in the fact that you don’t see a way out.

How hearing aids work

A hearing aid is a piece of electronic device which assists in restoring sound to persons with impaired hearing by the amplification of the sound. It does this by picking up the sound waves arriving at the external ear, processing them and sending the amplified sounds back into the ear.

Hearing aids now employ various types of hearing solutions to achieve this objective but they are all made up of essentially similar component parts. An amplifier picks up the sound waves as they arrive at the external ear and converts them into digital signals which are processed by a microchip, a mini-computer, installed within the hearing aid. The microchip is programmed by an auditory professional to meet the specific needs of the user, based on the results of a hearing test and the lifestyle of the user.

The signals are then strengthened by an amplifier to boost them before being converted into vibrations by a receiver which transmits them to the brain via the inner ear. The microchip is a sophisticated computer-like silicon chip which continuously modulates incoming sounds to ensure that only clear and audible sounds of the appropriate level of amplification can be transmitted into the ear. This whole device is powered by a tiny battery installed within it.

Analogue hearing aids previously in use do not have these capabilities even though they amplify sounds, but some are equipped with ‘automatic gain control’ features which enable them distinguish between quiet and loud sounds so that loud sounds are not further amplified to levels uncomfortable for the user.

Some hearing aids are combined with a sound generator. These combination devices are produced to assist persons suffering from tinnitus. The sound generator provides extra low level sounds which help in getting used to the tinnitus sound.

The modern digital hearing aid automatically adjusts itself to the sound level in the environment so that the user seamlessly adjusts to the varying sound waves arriving at the external ear. This way, the user is able to take part in conversations even when some participants are barely audible while others are speaking at the top of their voices.

Digital technology now makes it possible for modern hearing aids to be worn discretely. Some are so tiny they are barely visible because they sit far enough within the ear canal no one will notice them. The most advanced ones offer a wide range of personalisation options and they can deliver higher quality sounds with more natural listening experience. They can be enhanced to connect wirelessly to devices such as mobile phone, tablet, TV or stereo system.

What is Stress?

Stress is the way our body reacts to physical, mental or emotional pressure. Modern living conditions involve some level of pressure to which our body attempts to adjust. Every individual has a pressure threshold above which pressure turns into stress. The human body is equipped to develop coping mechanisms which attempt to limit the effects of pressure on the psyche and prevent it from turning into stress. Stress is therefore a result of failure of existing coping mechanisms or the inability of the individual to develop the appropriate coping mechanisms.

Causes and manifestations of stress

Stress can be triggered by a number of factors which may range from the ridiculous to the sublime, depending on the threshold of the individual. A situation one individual finds stressful and debilitating may be a source of motivation for another individual. Work and relationship related factors are common causes of stress. Inability of the individual to get on with work colleagues or bosses at work may lead to a stressful breakdown. A difficult marriage, divorce, loss of job, retirement, bereavement, a serious illness such as cancer are all recognised triggers of stress.

Stress can manifest in several ways, but the more common are headaches and sleep disturbances. These can sometimes be so debilitating that the individual may be unable to cope with ordinary tasks of daily living. Other forms of its manifestation include mood swings, appetite changes leading to weight loss or weight gain, palpitations not occasioned by any specific situation. In severe cases, stress may lead to depression, a medical condition which requires urgent medical attention.

As previously mentioned, stress is not always a bad thing as it can be a source of motivation for greater performance. However, when stress becomes harmful, it would be advisable to make an attempt to get rid of the stress factor. When this is impossible and the body is unable to develop the appropriate coping mechanisms, it is best to seek professional help.

What is Tinnitus?

Do you perceive unwanted ringing, buzzing, whistling, hissing or humming sounds in one or both of your ears? Does this sound interfere with your everyday life, sometimes making you feel depressed, irritable or giving you problems with sleep and loss of concentration while you are awake? If any of these symptoms describe what you experience every day, then you probably have tinnitus and you need to take necessary action to ameliorate it and regain your quality of life.

There are no known medications that have been shown to out-rightly cure this condition but fortunately, tinnitus does improve slowly over time due to a process known as habituation.  The brain learns to gradually get used to these sounds and their impact on your everyday life reduces with time.

There are self-help measures you can try on your own to ameliorate the effects of these sounds. These include listening to recorded relaxation sounds such as bird songs, rain and the sea. You may also wish to engage in regular exercise and general relaxation. It is essential to avoid exposure to loud noise as this tends to worsen the condition and may even lead to hearing damage. Keeping a low level background noise such as those coming from a fan or radio have been found to have some beneficial effects on tinnitus.

Tinnitus impacts on the lives of people in different ways. While some people are able to manage their symptoms successfully, others simply find that they need some support to achieve any measure of success. Many programs are now available to help ameliorate tinnitus related symptoms without resorting to over the counters or other complicated stuff. Some of these programs give you the benefit of an exclusive, personal one-on-one email counselling and support that come with them.
